Alfalfa

Alfalfa is a perennial legume crop that some consider to be the best cover crop and forage producer available. It is regularly planted on cropland to increase nitrogen levels without fertilizers. It also produces forage high in protein that is consumed by wildlife and livestock. It can be difficult to grow for more than a year in central Texas due to root rot, but it does well in the east, south and western parts of the state. The variety we usually stock is Cuf 101 which has a 9+ dormancy rating. Planting rate is 10 to 15 pounds per acre. The best time to plant in Texas is in the fall (Sept. to Oct.), but it can also be planted in the early spring if conditions are right. Sold by the pound or in 50 pound bags. Be sure to get inoculant to maximize production.
