Millets

The millets we sell are mostly used as cover crops for warm season plantings and for dove and quail food plots. Millet can be grown for hay but typically is only good for one cutting per planting. These are typically planted from May to July to be mature in time for dove season. Planting rate is 15 to 20 pounds per acre. ***BROWNTOP MILLET - Easy to grow warm-season annual. A "grassy" looking plant that branches readily and produces an abundance of seed in as little as 55 to 60 days. Excellent regrowth following periodic rainfall events. Height is 2 to 4 feet. Adapted to most soil types that have adequate drainage. Seed is attractive to both quail and dove, as well as wild ducks when flooded. Reseeds easily. A staple of any dove food plot. ***BIG GERMAN MILLET (FOXTAIL) - Very similar growth habits as the browntop millet but tends to germinate a few days earlier. This is the standard warm season cover crop used to nurse warm season planting. ***JAPANESE MILLET - A warm season annual similar to browntop millet, but with coarser stems. Grows to a height of 2 to 4 feet. After establishment, Japanese Millet can tolerate submersion in water for periods of several weeks without serious deterioration of the plant. Excellent food for waterfowl. Be sure to check with state and federal laws before planting crops for waterfowl.
