A native perennial, warm-season, densely tufted bunchgrass growing 1-3 feet tall with light-green, tender leaves. It has spike-like panicles 4-6 inches long with many bristles protruding. In its native state, it is frequently found on extremely dry sites and growing in brush, prickly pear and places where livestock are unable to reach. Drought and heat resistant. In south and west Texas, it has some green leaves almost all winter. Readily grazed by livestock.
