Van Horn Green Sprangletop

Van Horn Green Sprangletop

Green Sprangletop is a native, perennial, warm-season bunchgrass with fibrous roots. Van Horn green sprangletop was originally collected near Van Horn in Trans Pecos West Texas. It quickly establishes ground cover and provides quality forage for livestock. It also provides cover for ground nesting birds and can be used for reclamation.

It grows erect 1-3 ft. tall; the inflorescence finally drooping and pale after maturity. It is adapted as far north as the Texas Panhandle, south into Mexico, and prominent in rangeland north, south and westward from San Antonio to Arizona. Grows well on rocky, gravelly, and sandy soils; does well in heavier soils when introduced there.  Used chiefly for grazing and erosion control.

Good forage for livestock, fair forage for wildlife, and establishes ground cover quickly.
