Leucaena is a warm season tropical perennial woody species that is grown as a high protein browse for deer and a seed source for birds.  Leucaena is adapted to a wide range of soils and conditions, but should not be planted north of San Antonio, TX.  Leucaena can be an invasive species in the tropics and subtropics, but should not pose a problem in the areas that annually have a hard freeze.  It should be planted in the spring, usually between March and May.
