Description

Cane bluestem is a native, warm season perennial bunchgrass that grows 3-5’ tall. Cane bluestem grows well on a variety of soil types. It is found primarily in South, Central, and West Texas. The grass provides good to fair forage for livestock and wildlife, and provides good cover for birds. It is typically used as a component of rangeland and wildlife habitat restoration seed mixes, and for erosion control and revegetation on right-of-way.

A plant of western rangelands, this species’ ability to grow in extremely dry climates makes it an important plant for both livestock and wildlife. Because it decreases with overgrazing, its presence in a pasture is often an indication of good management.
