Description

Lometa Indiangrass is a native, warm season perennial bunchgrass that grows up to 5-7’ in height at maturity with blue green leaves. It is well adapted for use throughout Texas in areas that receive at least 22’ of rainfall. Lometa Indiangrass provides good forage for livestock, food and excellent cover for deer, small mammals, and birds, and good erosion control characteristics. It is used extensively for range and wildlife habitat restoration plantings.

Lometa Indiangrass was developed by the USDA NRCS Knox City Plant Materials Center. The variety was originated from native plants growing near Lometa, Texas in Lampasas County. Lometa Indiangrass has excellent establishment characteristics and it is frequently one of the first native grasses to emerge after planting. Indiangrass is one of the “big 4” grasses of the Tallgrass Prairie Ecosystem of North America. Over much of Texas, Indiangrass is one of the co-dominant native grasses of prairies, savannas, and rangelands. On many sites, Indiangrass and little bluestem are the major native grasses.
