Description

Wilson Indiangrass is a native, warm season perennial bunchgrass that grows 5-8’ tall at maturity. It is well adapted to a variety of soil types in the southern half of Texas. It is excellent wildlife cover and produces abundant high quality forage for livestock. Indiangrass is a desirable component of range and wildlife habitat restoration seed mixes, and also makes an attractive ornamental plant.

Wilson Indiangrass was developed by the Texas Native Seeds Program and the USDA NRCS Kingsville Plant Materials Center from native plants collected from a highway right-of-way in Wilson County, Texas. It is ideal for use in the South Texas Sand Sheet, limited portions of the Rio Grande Plain, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, and the southern portions of the Edwards Plateau, Blackland Prairie and Post Oak Savannah. Wilson Indiangrass is more true green in coloration than Lometa or Cheyenne Indiangrasses, and it tends to form colonies as opposed to distinct clumps that are often associated with Cheyenne Indiangrass. Wilson has had greater forage production than the other commercially available varieties when grown head to head in South Texas.
