Description

Falfurrias Big Sacaton is a native, warm season perennial bunchgrass that grows 3-8’ tall. It is tolerant of highly alkaline-saline soils and poorly drained areas along riparian corridors, making it an excellent species for restoration, erosion control, and use as a vegetative barrier. Big sacaton is naturally found throughout the Rio Grande Plain, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes and the Trans Pecos region of Texas. It has fair grazing value to cattle prior to maturity, provides excellent wildlife cover, and has copious seed production.

Falfurrias Big Sacaton was originally collected near the town of Falfurrias in Brooks County of South Texas. This release was developed for use in restoration of saline soils and for erosion control and vegetative barriers. It was developed and released by the USDA NRCS Kingsville Plant Materials Center in 1998.
