Short Description: Maximilian Sunflower is adapted to many soils and climates making it a widely distributed forb. It is useful as forage and cover for all types of livestock and many species of wildlife. It has also been considered to have potential use as a future biofuel source. This native warm-season forb, grows 3 to 9 feet tall with several stems. A perennial, it grows new shoots from an underground “tuber” year after year. Flowers are yellow and showy in late summer to fall. Performs well in riparian areas, lowland situations, upland prairies, well drained clays and loams, or blackland prairies. Quail and dove consume the seed while many species of birds use the growth for cover. Maximilian Sunflower can also be a good browse for deer. Maximilian Sunflower makes an attractive ornamental and provides stunning displays of vibrant yellow flowers from late September through November. Monarch butterflies frequently utilize the blooms as a food source during their autumn migration. Please call to place an order (210) 661-4191.
