Short Description: Canada wildrye is a short-lived cool season native perennial bunchgrass that grows to 4 feet. Seedlings are vigorous and establish quickly, but are not highly competitive with other grasses. It is moderately drought tolerant and winter hardy. It has good tolerance to salinity and tolerates shade very well. There are approximately 115,000 seeds per pound. Canada wildrye’s ability to produce cool season forage, shade tolerance, and value as cover and feed for deer and birds makes it a multi-use range grass. Description

Canada wildrye is a native, cool season perennial bunchgrass that grows 3-5’ at maturity. Found in all parts of the state, it can be important cool season forage on native rangelands. Livestock readily graze the grass, and it provides good cover for wildlife, especially in shady areas, in riparian corridors, and on river flood plains. Canada wildrye is commonly used in range seeding, right-of-way plantings, and as a component of wildlife habitat restoration seed mixes.

Canada wildrye’s ability to produce cool season forage on native rangelands, its shade tolerance, and value as wildlife cover makes it a multi-use range grass and excellent addition to native grassland restoration projects.

Planting

Plant in early fall at a minimum rate of 8-10 pounds pure live seed (PLS) per acre at 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep on clay soils and up to 1 inch deep on coarse textured soils
