Short Description: The Goliad Orange Zexmenia is a blend of collections from Val Verde, Starr, Goliad, Webb, Duval, Jim Hogg, and Bexar counties. It is a good plant for inclusion in native seed mixes for range use. It provides forage for wildlife and nectar for insects. It’s attractive yellow flower give it great potential for native landscaping uses. Orange Zexmenia may also provide unknown benefits by maintaining and contributing habitat that harbors beneficial insects and butterflies. It also can be used in many types of conservation plantings, such as stream-side buffers and filter strips. Orange zexmenia is an attractive plant for landscaping use because of its all around hardiness, drought tolerance, small shrub growth form, and brightly colored yellow-orange flowers. Description

Goliad Orange Zexmenia is a native, warm season perennial forb or subshrub that grows 1-3’ tall at maturity with yellow-orange flowers. It performs best in the Rio Grande Plain, Edward’s Plateau, and Trans Pecos on a wide range of soils. It is an excellent inclusion in native seed mixes, Deer frequently graze it and on some sites it is favored forage; quail will also eat the seeds. Cattle browse orange zexmenia, although it is not a favored food. Goliad attracts a wide range of pollinators and is extremely drought hardy. Common used include as a component of range seed mixes, pollinator plantings, and wildlife plantings. It is also a showy, hardy, and attractive native plant for ornamental uses.

Goliad a blend of collections from Val Verde, Starr, Goliad, Webb, Duval, Jim Hogg, and Bexar counties of South Texas that was developed by the USDA NRCS South Texas Plant Materials Center and the Texas Native Seed Program. Orange zexmenia is typically easy to establish from seed and once established plants are a long-lived and drought hardy.

Plant in early spring (can be planted in the fall in areas with few cool-season weeds) at a rate of 1 lb. pure live seed (PLS) per acre at 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep.
