Short Description: Texas Panicum is a native, warm season annual grass that grows 3-5’ in height at maturity. Also known as Concho Grass or Colorado Grass, Texas Panicum is a common native annual in South and Central Texas on disturbed soils, former cropland, and sandy rangelands. It is an excellent wildlife plant and produces abundant seed that is a favorite food of doves, quail and turkeys. It is also high quality livestock forage, however the growth period is short and overall forage production is relatively low, although the protein content is high. Texas Panicum can be used for wildlife food plots, as a nurse crop for other native species, and as a component or range and wildlife habitat restoration seed mixes.

Texas Panicum can sometimes be difficult or slow to establish from seed because of high amounts of seed dormancy. Plantings should occur in late spring or early summer for game bird food plots. With late summer rains, it will often volunteer and produce a second seed crop that matures in late fall. It is widely regarded as one of the most beneficial plants for attracting doves in South Texas.
