Short Description: Hubam is a well loved, superstar clover. It is a cool season annual white sweetclover that is highly preferred for its nectar by honey bees, native bees, and butterflies. Hubam is a fast growing, high protein forage producer that is excellent for wildlife and livestock. It is also used as cover crop for nitrogen fixation and soil penetration. Deer love hubam and their diets can be predominately comprised of sweetclover in the fall, when available. Upland game birds also love Hubam, as they will eat the seed and use the plant as cover. Hubam does well on a variety of soils, including sandy soils. In Central and South Texas, fall is the preferred planting time for this clover and it will bloom the following spring. However another popular planting time is at the end of winter/early spring for a later bloom. Hubam is the most heat tolerant of all the clovers and can bloom into the summer under favorable conditions. Hubam is a cool season biennial sweet clover that is used as a high protein forage for wildlife and livestock. Hubam is used as cover crop for nitrogen fixation and soil penetration and often attains a height of 10 feet. Hubam is highly preferred as a nectar plant for bees. Description

Hubam Clover is a cool season, annual or biennial sweet clover that grows up to 7-10’ in height. It is well adapted to most regions of Texas receiving at least 17” of annual rainfall and a wide range of soils. It is used as a high protein forage for wildlife and livestock. Hubam is also an excellent cover crop for nitrogen fixation and soil penetration in compacted soils. Hubam is highly preferred as a nectar plant for bees and provides excellent pollinator habitat in spring and early summer. It is commonly used in reclamation projects, wildlife plantings, and food plots. Deer browse this species, and quail, doves, and turkey consume the seeds.

Sweetclovers such as Hubam were once the most widely grown forage and soil building legumes used in the U.S. These plants are extremely drought-tolerant and very effective for soil improvement on sites that oftentimes grow little else. Sweetclovers are considered weedy in some regions and care should be taken to avoid planting them in natural areas.

Best Time to Plant: There are two planting times for Hubam Clover – Fall (October- November) & Late Winter/ Early Spring (depending on how far north you are changes how early in spring. You want to plant after there is no more chances of a freeze)
