Short Description: Kleingrass is a high protein, high yielding forage for cattle, but can be toxic to sheep, goats, and horses. Its dense foliage can provide good cover and habitat for wildlife, and the seeds are eaten by several game birds. Description

Kleingrass is a warm season, perennial bunchgrass growing 3-5’ in height that was introduced to Texas from Africa. Kleingrass is adapted to a wide range of soils throughout Texas and the southwest. It is typically less invasive than many other introduced forage grasses, although it can out compete native grasses on some soils.

Selection 75 Kleingrass was released by the USDA NRCS Plant Materials Center in 1969. It was originally selected at the USDA Soil Conservation Service Nursery in San Antonio. Selection 75 Kleingrass averages 17% crude protein in April in Texas, declining to 7% in October. Forage yields have been measured at 12,500 lbs. per acre annually. Kleingrass is typically recommended for areas that at least 18″ of rainfall per year.
