The Catarina blend of bristlegrass is comprised of collections from Webb, Karnes, Bexar, and Willacy counties. It is a native bunchgrass prized for its value to livestock and as excellent cover for upland game species such as quail, a hearty mix that can be used in rangeland seed mixes and conservation applications. They produce seed from May to November. Excellent quail habitat and highly desirable for livestock. Can also be used in conservation plantings, such as riparian buffers and filter strips. Description
Catarina Bristlegrass is a blend of native, warm season perennial bunchgrasses that grow 3-5’ in height. This blend is widely adapted to most soil types except very sand soils in South Texas and adjacent regions. Plains and streambank bristlegrasses are included in the blend, both of which provide good forage for livestock and excellent cover and seed production for wildlife. Quail, doves, and turkeys all relish the seed of bristlegrasses. Catarina is a major component of range, wildlife, and reclamation seed mixes planted in the southern third of Texas.
Components of Catarina Bristlegrass originate from native plants collected in Webb, Karnes, Bexar, and Willacy Counties of Texas. The selection was developed by the USDA NRCS E. “Kika” de la Garza Plant Materials Center in collaboration with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station and the Texas Native Seeds Program. Typically slow to establish from seed because of a high degree of seed dormancy, Catarina should be ideally be planted as part of a diverse mix of other native grasses and forbs. It can have utility as a component of perennial food plot planting for wildlife.

Plant in early spring (can be planted in the fall in areas with few cool-season weeds) at a rate of 2 lbs. pure live seed (PLS) per acre at 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep.
