Description

Cowpeas are a vining annual legume crop that grow 1 to 2 ft. tall. Cowpeas are widely adapted throughout Texas, are drought resistant, and easily established. Cowpeas are used for livestock forage, as a component of wildlife food plots, and as nitrogen fixing cover crops.

Unlike other cowpea varieties, Iron & Clay cowpeas continue to grow and produce forage after the seed is dropped. Cowpeas are highly palatable to deer, with crude protein content of up to 27%. Quail and other game birds relish the seed and benefit from its nutritional value if the plant is allowed to produce seed. Seed matures around 100 days after planting.
