Winter wheat is a annual cool season small grain that grows to 3’ in height. Used primarily for grain production, winter wheat can also be used as a drought tolerant, easy to establish forage crop for wildlife and livestock grazing. In some areas, it makes a good nurse crop for native seed mixes that must be planted in winter. For this use, seeding rates should be reduced to prevent dense thatch that will prevent the emergence of warm season native species. If allowed to mature, winter wheat can be an excellent attractant for doves in autumn.
