Description

Lavaca Canada Wildrye is a native, cool season perennial bunchgrass that grows up to 5’ tall. It is adapted for use throughout Texas on most soil types. It is good cool season forage for livestock and deer, and provides nesting cover for fawns. Typical uses include in range and wildlife habitat restoration seed mixes and for cool season erosion control plantings.

Lavaca was originally collected in Lavaca County, Texas and was developed for release by the USDA NRCS Kingsville Plant Materials Center. Its ability to produce cool season forage, good shade tolerance, and value as cover and feed for deer and birds makes it a multi-use range grass.

Planting

Plant in early fall at a minimum rate of 10 pounds pure live seed (PLS) per acre at 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep on clay soils and up to 1 inch deep on coarse textured soils.
