Short Description: Goliad Orange Zexmenia is a native, warm season perennial forb or subshrub that grows 1-3’ tall at maturity with yellow-orange flowers.  It performs best in the Rio Grande Plain, Edward’s Plateau, and Trans Pecos on a wide range of soils. It is an excellent inclusion in native seed mixes, Deer frequently graze it and on some sites it is favored forage; quail will also eat the seeds.  Cattle browse orange zexmenia, although it is not a favored food. Goliad attracts a wide range of pollinators and is extremely drought hardy.  Common used include as a component of range seed mixes, pollinator plantings, and wildlife plantings.  It is also a showy, hardy, and attractive native plant for ornamental uses. Goliad a blend of collections from Val Verde, Starr, Goliad, Webb, Duval, Jim Hogg, and Bexar counties of South Texas that was developed by the USDA NRCS South Texas Plant Materials Center and the Texas Native Seed Program. Orange zexmenia is typically easy to establish from seed and once established plants are a long-lived and drought hardy. Planting: Plant in early spring (can be planted in the fall in areas with few cool-season weeds) at a rate of 1 lb. pure live seed.
